The Culture & Heritage Coordinator will be responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of Shuswap Band cultural heritage initiatives and policies aimed at protecting and stewarding cultural resources. This role requires collaboration with internal teams, external organizations, and community members to ensure that the Shuswap Band’s culture and heritage are upheld. The coordinator will work closely with the Guardian Manager, Director of Territorial Stewardship, Finance department, and Executive Director, assisting with project management as required.
Key Responsibilities:
-Advocacy & Representation: Advocate for Shuswap Band community and Secwepemc culture with external entities, including BC Hydro, mining and energy companies, government agencies (e.g., Parks Canada, Ministry of Transportation), and tourism organizations.
-Collaboration & Engagement: Work with both internal and external teams to enhance Shuswap Band’s presence and cultural awareness throughout the Caretaker Area.
-Event Coordination: Organize and coordinate meetings, community engagement sessions, consultation events, and project meetings.
-Advisory Role: Provide recommendations to Chief & Council, as well as Band departments (e.g., Health, Territorial Stewardship), regarding culture, language, and ceremonial initiatives.
-Administrative Support: Handle office administration tasks including filing, report reviews, drafting correspondence, preparing proposals, and basic accounting management (processing invoices, travel arrangements).
-Technical Skills: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook), data entry, website management, and project management software.
-Cultural Stewardship: Support Secwepemc health and wellness initiatives by incorporating cultural perspectives and needs.
-Fundraising Support: Assist in fundraising events to support Elders/Knowledge Keepers attending seasonal gatherings and other cultural events.
-Referral Responses: Contribute to responses on development referrals impacting Shuswap Band Rights and Title in Secwepemc Territory.
-Research & Reporting: Assist with research and technical report writing, including conducting interviews with Elders and Land Users.
-Knowledge Keepers Council: Chair and organize Knowledge Keepers Council meetings and trips.
-Other Duties: Perform additional duties as assigned by the Guardians Manager or Director of Territorial Stewardship.
Qualifications:
-Education: Grade 12 graduation or equivalent combination of experience and competencies.
-Experience: Previous experience in a related field, with knowledge of cultural heritage management and project coordination.
-Licensing: Valid BC driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
-Cultural Knowledge: Understanding of Shuswap Band community, Secwepemc culture, and language is an asset.
-Legal & Policy Knowledge: Familiarity with First Nations Rights and Title issues, case law, and federal/provincial legislation affecting land use and heritage protection.
-Technical Skills: Experience with technical writing, project management, and knowledge of mapping software (e.g., Google Earth) is an asset.
-Organization & Communication: Strong organizational and multitasking skills, with excellent interpersonal and communication abilities.
-Physical Requirements: Ability to walk or hike long distances on steep terrain, and in various weather conditions. Ability to use GPS and tablet software when required.
-Travel: Willingness to travel extensively within Shuswap Band territory.
-Background Check: Must be able to pass an RCMP Criminal Record Check.
Terms and Conditions:
-Full-time position, with Monday to Friday work hours (9:00 am – 4:00 pm).
-Based at the Shuswap Band Office.
-Salary based on qualifications and experience.
-As a maternity leave replacement, the position is temporary, with the potential for extension or permanent placement based on the needs of the organization.
